Sacred tree of the Mayas
The Ceiba Pentandra is an enduring and fast growing tree, when young, it covers its trunk with large thorns that disappear when the trunk becomes thick. It is native to the Mesoamerican region and is distributed worldwide in the intertropical zone.
It can exceed 60 to 70 meters in height, with a straight, thick trunk, up to 3 more in diameter, usually without branching, forming a large crown with horizontally extended branches. The tabular roots several meters high and extended above and below the ground function as buttresses.
The tree is intensively cultivated in Asia, especially in Java (hence its nicknames), Malaysia and Indonesia, but also in the Philippines and South America. Its cottony fiber, called miraguano or wadding, is marketed. Kapok fiber is light, highly buoyant, resistant, highly flammable and waterproof. This fiber cannot be rotated, to be rolled, but it is used as filler for mattresses, pillows, upholstery, dolls, and for insulation.
In the Mexican southeast, it is known as "the sacred tree of the Mayans."
