Scourer Seeds (Luffa cylindrica)
Package with 50 fresh seeds collected this season.
It is an important useful plant, widely distributed throughout the tropics and cultivated both commercially and in home gardens. It feral in these crops. Native to the Old World (Asia or Africa).
Widely distributed, escaped from cultivation, and probably naturalized in the tropical states of Mexico. Among the cucurbits it is recognized as a vigorous climber generally found near human settlements, with large, relatively flat yellow flowers and fruits that are fibrous when ripe.
It is found in the regions of high evergreen forest, low deciduous forest and the lower parts of the mesophilic forest. Since it is a species prized for its usefulness, it is widely cultivated and promoted in this way. It has flowers and fruits throughout the year, if the right environmental conditions exist.
The fibrous interior of the dried fruit is used for washing dishes or in place of a sponge during bathing. The immature fruits are edible and are consumed frequently in Asia, and occasionally in Latin America. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant (Lira, 1988), it has leaves used as forage and semi-drying oil can be extracted from the seeds.
