The nopal -or nopalli- is a Mexican plant that belongs to the cactus family.
The nopal, with a hard texture, green color and thorny body, is found from the north to central Mexico. In the country there are more than 100 spices and they have been used since pre-Hispanic times in countless applications.
Nopales can survive various land and weather conditions, from sea level to elevations of more than 5000 m in the mountains; from tropical regions of Mexico where temperatures are always above 10°C to regions where they experience freezing levels of -20° C.
Its high water content helps prevent dehydration (a very natural raw remedy) and regulates blood sugar levels.
Nopales are an excellent alternative to be incorporated into the daily diet, even for people with diabetes. The caloric intake of nopales and prickly pears is low.
The nopal and its fruit contain a high concentration of potassium, calcium and magnesium, minerals that help maintain the health of our bones. The tuna fruit or xoconostle, contains vitamin C, and apart from that it has a low calorie intake, and if the prickly pears are red, they contain important antioxidants.
