The guava tree is a natural shrub or small tree of tropical America, it is a very common species in livestock regions of the humid tropics due to its ease of growth in paddocks dedicated for this purpose. Its fruit is guava.
It is an evergreen or deciduous tree or shrub that can measure between 2.5 meters and 10 meters in height, whose trunk has a diameter of up to 60 cm. Generally twisted and highly branched trunk, hardwood, its bark is gray.
Its leaves are simple, oblong or elliptical, bright green to brownish green, very fragrant when squeezed. Its flowers are solitary, occasionally they appear in clusters of up to 8 cm, being axillary, with sepals of 4 to 5, green on the outside and white on the inside.
Its fruit is a berry that is highly appreciated for its mild acidity and good flavor. The rind is yellow-greenish tones and its interior can be pink, red, white, yellow or orange. The pulp is characterized by containing many small seeds and by a sweet aroma.
Distribution
In Mexico it is found in the wild from the south of Tamaulipas, east of San Luis Potosí, north of Puebla to the Yucatan Peninsula on the Gulf slope; and from Sonora to Chiapas on the Pacific slope.
