Tree that reaches up to 12 m in height, deciduous; dense crown and fissured bark; compound ovate leaves, dark green elliptical leaflets; flowers in slightly perfumed panicles, pink or slightly purple petals, blooms from February to May; pod-shaped fruits with brown wings and elongated brittle when ripe.
It is a native species of Mexico, whose distribution is found on the Pacific slope, from the south of Tamaulipas, to the Yucatan peninsula; on the slope of the Gulf of Mexico, from Nayarit to Chiapas. Although there are also records in the states of San Luis Potosí, Puebla and Hidalgo.
It grows in tall evergreen and sub-evergreen forests, medium-sized sub-deciduous and sub-evergreen, low deciduous and spiny deciduous forests.
Appreciated in beekeeping since it lasts 4 months in flowering and produces nectar, it is forage, its leaves are used as sedatives and for respiratory disorders, also as a scent leaf for the cochinita pibil, its wood is of good quality, it is used for springs , walkers, posts, sleepers and livestock gates, among other uses.
