Sea Pine Seeds (Casuarina equisetifolia)
Package with 100 seeds, ideal for bonsai.
Evergreen tree, with a sparse crown and generally pyramidal, with erect or somewhat pendulous branches that from a distance have the appearance of a pine. In the Canary Islands it reaches 10-15 m, but in other places it reaches 40 m. The trunk is straight and has a rough, fissured, gray-brown bark. What at first glance appear to be pine needles (leaves) are actually very thin, hanging, grayish-green twigs. On the other hand, the true leaves are tiny scales arranged like rings at the nodes of these twigs.
It lives naturally in arid and semi-arid climates of tropical and subtropical areas, in sandy areas and saline environments near the coast. It is undemanding and resists strong winds, prolonged droughts and proximity to the sea. Although it prefers sandy and well-drained substrates, it adapts to any type of soil, even poor and debris. In the Canary Islands it grows in coastal areas and in the lower band of the basal floor.
In many places the favorite tree to establish BONSAIS, due to its rapid growth and low soil requirements.
This casuarina has been widely used to form very effective high-rise protective screens against wind and sea salt. A clear example is the extensive maritime pine grove planted in the vicinity of the Gran Canaria airport. It has also been widely used in the reforestation of coastal areas and degraded soils.
